I routinely scour local thrift shops because you never know what has been donated in the past few days. I found this chest of drawers at our local Goodwill store. It was a Friday afternoon and it was only $25. I was struggling with just buying it that day or waiting until the next day for the monthly 50% off sale. I decided to gamble and waited until Saturday. Lucky for me, it was still there! So I picked it up for $12.50.
Someone had started stripping one of the drawers and it was clear the piece had been painted at one point because you could see bits of residual white paint here and there. It had a thick coat of poly and stain on it.
I removed the drawer pulls. I found the other two drawer pulls inside a couple of the drawers so I had them all if I chose to reuse them.
I decided to paint the base and possibly strip the drawers and leave them the natural wood.
I added a coat of stripper to the drawers to see how easy it would be strip the piece. It took took coats of stripper and a lot of sanding to get the thick coat of poly off of the drawers.
The wood seemed to look different from drawer to drawer. I stained the drawers with Varathane Premium Woodstain in the Gunstock color.
It seemed to even out the look of the drawers.
I painted the base with two coats of Rustoleum Chalk Paint in the Charcoal color.
I didn't like how the color looked with the drawers, so I gave it a coat of Folk Art black chalk paint.
After it was dry, I distressed the piece with 100 grit sandpaper.
I finished the piece and the drawers with Varathane Crystal Clear Satin Polyurethane.
I decided to not reuse the existing drawer pulls. I ordered these pulls from Etsy. They came with small screws, but they wouldn't work for drawer pulls. I purchased 6 x 1in screws and nuts. These particular screws were already black and matched the drawer pulls.
They were perfect. I was able to use the existing holes to install these pulls. I cut scrapbooking paper to fit the insert slot in the pull.
I was really happy with how it turned out. I love the contrast of the stain on the drawers with the black paint of the base. The file drawer pulls add a modern twist to this piece. This would fit perfectly wtih modern farmhouse decor.
