It is always fun to take something that is a little worn, a little battered and give it a new life. I found this table at an auction. I got it for almost nothing because it wasn't very pretty. It just needed a little TLC.
It had some nice detail on the sides and it was all intact. Sometimes pieces are missing from the side detail. I sanded it down to get the rough edges off the piece.
I started by placing the piece upside down on my drop cloth.
I used Rustoleum Chalked spray paint in the Coastal Blue.
I gave it two coats. I could have probably gone with one, but there were a few spots I missed on the first coat. After it was dry, I flipped it back over.
I sprayed the remainder of the table. Again, I used two coats for the top.
After drying for a couple of days, I distressed it with 120 grit sandpaper all over the piece. I used a soft brush to remove all the dust from the sanding.
I used Varathane Crystal Clear Satin Polyurethane to clear coat the piece. Always pour your poly in a separate container, particularly when using dark colors. The brush picks up some of the chalk paint and tends to tint the poly. You don't want your entire can of poly contaminated. Pour out less than you think you will need. You can always pour more, but you shouldn't pour it back in the can if you have poured out too much and didn't use it all.
I let the piece dry for several hours.
I think it turned out really well. It will make a nice side table or nightstand now. The Coastal Blue color fits in well with many modern color palettes.
Keep an eye out for those less than pretty pieces. As long as they are solid, they are really easy to make over.
