One of the reasons I write this blog is I want people to see the potential in discarded items. Just because they have served a particular purpose for a number of years doesn't necessarily mean their lifespan is over when that original purpose is complete. I am not sure what the original use of these panels would have been. I found them at an auction a couple of weeks ago. They were tucked in a corner and almost overlooked by the auctioneer. I didn't see them until the auctioneer was auctioning the cabinet next these. I was able to get these for a great price. Yay!
They are pretty big and they are really heavy!
They were also really dirty! I usually use Krud Kutter and clean almost everything I repurpose.
I had no idea it was this dirty! Ick! The pile of rags on the right is the "after" cleaning pile. Scary.
The above photo shows the top panel before cleaning and the bottom panel is after cleaning. What a difference!
Then we added a coat of Varathane Ultimate Spar Urethane in Crystal Clear Satin. It gave the piece a clean fresh look.
We decided to upcycle the door panel into a coat rack. The above photo shows Lauren attaching coat hooks. Truth be told, this project was all her and not me!
We picked up these coat hooks at Hobby Lobby. They were 50% off too! Woot woot! They fit perfectly in the panels. They literally look like they were made for this panel size.
This was such an easy makeover (once it was cleaned!). It is a beautiful piece of wood now that would look lovely in a home to organize coats and hats.
It is a substantially heavy piece so we attached three hooks to the back. If I were putting it in my home, I would probably add a French cleat to the back to ensure it would hold the weight of coats.
It is perfect for an entryway or mudroom to catch odds and ends. It went into the booth at The Standard this afternoon and I heard people have already expressed interest in this piece! Fortunately we have two! Update: One has sold already!
