A friend of mine and I started an estate sale company last year (R2 Estate Sales—follow us if you live in Northern Indiana!). We did a sale a couple months ago and this little vanity bench was still there on the last day of the sale. We had marked it down a couple of times and by the end of the second day, it was only a couple of dollars. I tucked it into the back of my SUV. Otherwise it would have would up at a thrift store and would have been someone else's treasure!
The wood paneling wasn't doing it any favors. I am not sure why it was even on the bottom part.
I removed the wood paneling. It was a little wobbly, so I glued and clamped it and let it dry for a couple of days.
I cleaned it and gave it a coat of Folk Art Chalk Art in the Rich Black color.
I distressed it with 100 grit sandpaper and coated it with Rustoleum Matte Clear.
Since the wood paneling was already cut to the size of the seat, I used it as the base for the reupholstery.
I added a piece of foam cut to size and covered it with a piece of cotton batting. I stapled it in place.
I used this buffalo plaid upholstery weight fabric I found at Hobby Lobby. I covered a button and used it to tuft the seat.
Now it is a nice piece for additional seating in any room. It would function well in a living room, a foyer or even a bedroom.
