FIELD NOTES: APPARENTLY, I LIVE AT AUCTIONS NOW

Third auction this week.

September 12, 2026—Today’s auction was HUGE. Three rings. Mountains of stuff. Tons of bidders. And approximately the same temperature as the surface of the sun. I believe I melted sometime around noon.

I also lost out on about 80% of the things I intended to buy. And you know what? GOOD. I’m reselling most of this stuff, which means I have a number in my head and when the bidding goes past it, I have to stop. Even when I want it. Even when I’m already emotionally decorating my booth with it. Even when my auction brain whispers, “What’s another five dollars?” THAT IS HOW THEY GET YOU.

Still, I came home with:

Copper food molds (and one of them was filled with all those miniatures!),

Wooden rolling pin

old wooden rolling pins,

Fireking mug

a Fire-King mug,

biscuit cutters

biscuit cutters,

old books,

hand painted pitcher and four juice glasses

a hand-painted pitcher with four matching glasses,

box of viking glass vases

little Viking Glass vases,

tote of old cookbooks

and an entire tote of vintage cookbooks that I cannot WAIT to dig through.

And somehow I bought another 1960s tin litho dollhouse. But my favorite find might be a weird little metal shoe. These were once advertising/promotional pieces for shoe stores, and I’ve been quietly collecting them because they’re surprisingly difficult to find. This makes NUMBER SIX.

And then... THERE WERE THE DOLLS. So. Many. Dolls. The old ones. The ones that look like they know things.

I wasn’t in that auction ring when they sold, but I spotted this truck nearby afterward and apparently THE DOLLS FOUND A HOME. All of them. Together. In one vehicle. Godspeed to whoever is sleeping in that house tonight.

As much as I complained about today’s blazing heat, outdoor auction season will start winding down as we head into fall. I’ll miss these ridiculous days when winter gets here. On the bright side, perhaps I’ll finally have time to price the mountain of inventory I’ve accumulated while taking the back road and finding the good junk.

Three auctions in one week. I think that’s enough. For now. 😂

Take the back roads. Find the good stuff.
