Pssst...Gossip Bench

"Well, you know they say: if you don't have anything nice things to say about anybody, come sit by me!" —Clairee Belcher, Steel Magnolias

I love a lot of quotes from the movie Steel Magnolias. I don't necessarily love to hear nasty things about people, but we can all spread good things—right? So let me tell you about this little gossip bench!

I found this at the Shipshewana Auction barn earlier this spring. I thought it would be a great project for my God-daughter. I snapped a pic at the auction barn and sent it to her.

Looks like she liked it. She was at college so it had to wait a few weeks to get started on it.

This gossip bench was rock solid, it just needed some love.

She gave it two coats of Chalked Chiffon Cream paint, distressed it a bit and then used Varathane Crystal Clear Satin Polyurethane.

Then we had to remove all the old fabric from the seat of the chair. Thankfully, it was only one layer of old fabric. It was full of dust though! We removed the old padding.

We added new foam, a layer of batting and a pretty floral fabric. In fact, it was the same fabric she had just used on a little footstool. You can see that project here.

This fabric complemented the color of the chalk paint very well. We reattached the seat to the gossip bench and it was finished!

Now it is ready for someone to take a quick break, take a call, make a list or just relax for a few minutes.

You could even take a minute to make a call on this vintage red tin litho phone. How cute it that!

Paint and fabric can make such a difference. It just really cleans and freshens up any piece.
