Decorative signs are everywhere. They are so popular now sometimes I think I should move on to whatever the next trend will be. But I keep finding wood pieces that are so perfect for signs that I can't help myself. I end up making signs with them. I got a whole pile of wood at an estate sale last October. It was a variety of barn wood, cabinet doors, table leafs and just all kinds of goodies. In that pile was two long and narrow cabinet doors.
The patina was so nice, all they needed was some cleaning.
I cleaned all the boards with good old soap and water and a scrub brush.
After the boards were cleaned and had dried for a few days, I applied a coat of Varanthane Crystal Clear Polyurethane Satin.
I made a couple of vinyl stencils with my Silhouette Cameo 3. I love the vinyl machines for making stencils because you can create your own artwork and custom make them to any size you need. I sized these to fit the boards.
Using the transfer paper, I peeled the backing off the stencel and applied them to the boards.
I used my stencil brush to apply two coats of Waverly Chalk Paint in the Cashew color. When it was dry, I peeled up the vinyl.
I distressed the signs with 100 grit sandpaper. I was trying to make the paint match the patina of the wood.
I applied a final coat of the polyurethane to seal the signs. I attached hanging hooks to the back of the boards.
The signs are perfect for farmhouse decor. They would fit perfectly in a wall collage as well.
