Upcycled Advent Calendar

I have been squirreled away in my workshop getting Christmas things ready for all the shop locations. I have two locations finished. I'm already loaded up to fill up another one tomorrow. Typically, I look for things I can upcyle into Christmas tree bases. I bought this commercial sized baking pan at an auction last summer. I wasn't sure what I was going to do with it, but the price was right. I guess it was a pan for baking muffin tops? Are muffin tops as good when they are baked specifically as a muffin top or does the goodnesses come from ripping the top off of a full muffin? I digress.

As I was creating things for Christmas, I noticed it had 24 compartments—perfect for an advent calendar! Baking is a natural part of the holiday season so I thought a baking pan would be a natural fit. I scrubbed it with a steel wool pad to clean it up a bit.

I cut the numbers 1 through 24 out of red vinyl on my Silhouette Cameo 3 machine and applied a number to each indented area.

I needed to create a magnet of some sort to mark each day of the calendar. In keeping with the baking theme, I looked through my stash of cookie cutters to find a star shape. I thought I had one with a red or green wooden handle but it wasn't in my stash. Hmmm, this one will have to do.

It fit perfectly in the indented area.

I had to build up the area inside the cookie cutter to make the magnet flush with the edge of the cookie cutter.

Next, I had to figure out how to hang this on a wall.

I drilled a small hole in each side of the tray and inserted a piece of twine.

I tied a couple of knots in the twine to ensure it would not poke through the hole. Doing this on each side created a solution to hang the pan.

I was really pleased with how it turned out. Although you see all kinds of advent calendars, you don't really see any like this! It is in the booth (Pipe Creek Mercantile) and ready for the open house this weekend!
