I found this cute little table a few weeks ago at the Goodwill store. It was banged up a bit but it was still adorable. It was priced $12 but after some discounts, I paid about $7—a pretty good deal!
The original wood was rough in several spots, but I wanted to amp up the nautical feel.
Seriously, was someone gnawing on this?
The first thing I did was take it apart. I wanted to re-glue it anyway, but I also thought it would be easier to paint the design I had in mind if it was disassembled.
When I disassemble something, I put all the screws, etc in a bag. It keeps them all together and if I have to put the project away for a couple of weeks, I can mark the name of the project on the bag.
I used Folk Art Chalk paint in Sheepskin color. I did a quick coat on all the pieces.
I had to put a second coat on each piece.
I wanted blue stripes on the oars. I selected three shades of blue from my stash. Folk Art chalk paint in Grotto and Cascade as well as Rustoleum Chalked in Serenity Blue. I taped off the stripes with Frog tape (love!) using a ruler to ensure they were all equal.
I put a coat of the Serenity Blue on the lower shelf.
The oars needed a couple of coats of blue for each stripe.
And then the reveal!
I really loved how they turned out. I did some sanding all over the table to create a weathered look.
I assembled the pieces. I loved how it was coming together, but I thought it needed something on the top.
After consulting a couple of friends, we landed on this anchor stencil (the red is a piece of paper under the stencil).
I used the Serenity Blue for the anchor.
And then distressed it with sandpaper. I put a coat of polyurethane over the entire table.
This is the finished project! I am really happy with how it turned out. I thought about buying a lake house so I could keep it, but thought that would be a bit over the top.
