Feral Raccoon Field Report: Day One

Current Status: Recently released into the wild.

Months of planning. Weeks of anticipation. Last-minute "Do we really need another tote?" discussions.
And just like that...the raccoons were officially loose. We rolled into the Van Wert, Ohio stretch of the 127 Sale with beverages in hand, empty cargo space, and the completely irrational confidence that we'd "be selective."

We reached Van Wert, Ohio in a little over two hours. The only decision? Where do we start??? Within minutes, we see a sale. As we climbed out of the van, someone spotted an old basket. Another found a vintage quilt. The third found a vintage hand crocheted afghan. We were off to a great start!
Day One is always dangerous because every sale feels full of possibility. Every handwritten sign that says ANTIQUES, BARN SALE, or simply YARD SALE sends our hearts racing. Brake lights became our love language.
Our GPS has completely given up because it doesn't account for random roadside excitement. "Ooh!" "Back up!" "I think I saw ironstone!" "Was that a grain bin?" "We have to turn around." The person driving deserves hazard pay.
Somewhere around mid-afternoon, we stopped asking each other if we needed something. Instead, our conversations sounded like this:
"Do you need help carrying that to the car?"
This is the kind of unwavering support every friendship deserves.
The best part of Day One wasn't just the treasures—it was settling into the rhythm of the hunt. The dusty back roads. The vendors who greeted us with stories before they talked prices. The excitement of opening an old drawer or digging through a forgotten box and finding something that hadn't seen daylight in decades. Every stop held the possibility of the find. Sometimes it was. Sometimes it was just three friends standing around admiring an old wooden crate like museum curators. Either way, we were having the time of our lives.
The vehicle is already noticeably heavier. We have begun the strategic packing phase. Baskets now contain smaller baskets. Crocks contain smaller items. Fragile treasures are wrapped in the padding we brought with us to ensure they get home safely. No space is wasted. No treasure left behind.
Here's a recap of our favorite finds today!
As the sun set on Day One, we compared our favorite finds, laughed over the ones that got away, and started planning tomorrow's route...
Today's mission was a complete success.

The Vintage Raccoons are officially on the trail.
